Snapchat Announces app Overhaul

Snapchat

Initially released on September 2011, Snapchat is a widely known instant messaging and multimedia mobile app created by Stanford University’s former students: Evan Spiegel, Reggie Brown and Bobby Murphy. Originally, Snapchat was focused on private person-to-person photo sharing, its original concept is that photos and messages are only available for a short period of time just before they become inaccessible.

Soon after, new features were added to the app, multi-features like: allowing users to send shorts videos, communicate via video chat, as well as saving necessary chat information by simple pressing on a specific message. Snapchat also introduced the My Story feature, which allows users to compile snaps (images) into chronological storylines that is accessible to all of their friends. This feature was later on upgraded to Live Stories which allows the user to contribute story that is available to all Snapchat users.

The app also added features like Memories which allows users to save snaps and story posts to a private storage area, the Geostickers which is a city-specific stickers that allow a user to place these Geotickers on every snaps and messages; this was also upgraded to World Stickers which allows Snapchat users to add augmented reality objects to any scenery.

Snapchat’s innovative features has gained global recognition, being used and patronized by millions and millions of users, not just because of its multifunctional features, but also with its snap filters which users find enjoyable. Given these statements that Snapchat has been one of the social media platforms that competed against the major social media website: Facebook when it comes to mobile apps, Snapchat has announced another update that can make Snapchat a easier and better for its users.

On November 7, 2017, Evan Spiegel, Chief Executive officer of Snapchat has announced that the app is working on a specific overhaul of its app. As based on their surveys from their users, Spiegel said that the reason for the apps overhaul is from the comments they’ve heard through the years that the app is difficult to understand or not user-friendly.

These seems like a bigger tweak than some minor user experience tweaks, in which Evan Spiegel said that there are strong possibility that the app’s overhaul will be disruptive to their business in the short term, and that they don’t have the idea on how the behaviour or the community will change when they start updating Snapchat; yet they are still willing to take that risk for what they believe are considerable long term benefits to their business.

In accordance to Snapchat’s new features included when the app has undergone redesigning, Evan Spiegel said that Snachat had to include a manual for using the app’s IPO filing, which indicates that the app is not the most intuitive software in the world. Spiegel also added that Snapchat is now exploring new ways of introducing the app’s content in a more personalized and relevant way, without sacrificing the exploratory nature of the app itself.
